Choosing the right Access Point (AP) can seem complicated with so many options available in the UniFi range. But if we follow a simple logic — technology ➝ space/density ➝ aesthetics — the decision becomes much clearer.
The first step is to define the Wi-Fi generation that makes the most sense for your project:
Wi-Fi 6 (U6 Lite, U6+, U6 Pro, U6 LR, U6 In-Wall)
Stable technology, excellent price-to-performance ratio. Sufficient for most homes and small offices.
Wi-Fi 6E (U6 Enterprise)
Adds the 6 GHz band, ideal for reducing interference in dense environments (schools, auditoriums, coworking spaces).
Wi-Fi 7 (U7 Pro, U7 Pro Max, U7 Pro Enterprise, U7 Campus, U7 Outdoor, U7 Pro Outdoor)
The new generation, with more throughput, lower latency and better efficiency in multi-user scenarios. Recommended for those who want to be future-ready or need professional/campus infrastructure.
💡 NetPatch tip: even in residential projects, choosing Wi-Fi 7 now can avoid replacements within 2-3 years as new devices support the standard.
With the technology chosen, it's time to evaluate area size, number of users and environment type.
Small homes or apartments (up to 70 m², low density):
Wi-Fi 6: U6+
Wi-Fi 7: U7 Lite
Larger homes or small/medium offices (100-200 m², medium density):
Wi-Fi 6: U6 Pro, U6 LR
Wi-Fi 7: U7 Pro, U7 Pro Max
High-density environments (conference rooms, schools, hotels, auditoriums):
Wi-Fi 6E: U6 Enterprise
Wi-Fi 7: E7, E7 Campus, E7 Audience
Outdoor spaces (gardens, warehouses, parks, campuses):
Wi-Fi 7: U7 Outdoor, U7 Pro Outdoor
Finally, consider how the AP will physically integrate into the environment.
Ceiling mounting (classic):
Best for covering open areas.
Ex.: U6 Lite, U6 Pro, U7 Pro, U7 Pro Max.
In-Wall models (wall/network outlet):
Ideal for hotel rooms, private offices or homes with multiple rooms.
Function as AP + PoE switch (have additional LAN ports).
Ex.: U6 In-Wall, U7 In-Wall.
Discreet design (FlexHD):
Aesthetic and compact, can be placed on desks or indoor areas where design matters as much as coverage.
By following these three steps — technology ➝ size/density ➝ aesthetics — choosing the right UniFi Access Point becomes much simpler. Whether for a small home, a growing office or a university campus, UniFi has models designed for every need and every space.
